I live in Qatar, the house I rent comes
with weekly maid service. I do not know what her name is but she comes
once a week. I am unfamiliar with the housekeeping rules of engagement but
I feel safe in saying that the cleaning abilities of my maid can be categorized
as "shitty."
Before you get all bent out of shape
because someone like me is complaining about his maid, let me explain...
I had a modest childhood. I was
not overly spoiled, nor did I ever go hungry. Anything I wanted I had to
pay for with my allowance, or by doing extra chores. My family did not
have a maid. My mom took care of the house while my Dad worked. I
would never in a million years would have thought that I would be the type of
uptight bastard that would bitch about his hired help. When I say that my
maid is "shitty", you can bet dollar to doughnuts that I have damn
good reasons.
Reason #1: She is not bright:
Normally, I get up for work at about
8:30 am. Normally, the maid comes on Thursday and she shows up at about
7:30am. If she finds that I am still sleeping, she will leave and come
back the next day. If she comes back the next day, and sees me
sleeping, she will leave again and come back the next day. This is
a vicious cycle. I finally had to tell her that she could come in even
if I was sleeping. After about three weeks of me telling her this, she
finally got the picture.
Reason #2: She is lazy:
If you are not aware of this, I shave my
head. I use some plug-in clippers to accomplish this. I do this in
the bathroom. I take a towel and place it over the sink to catch all the
hair. When I am done, I shake out the towel into the garbage and put the
towel in the dirty clothes basket. Even though I have shaken the hair
out of the towel, there is still lots of hair that remains. This hair
normally get taken care of when the towel is washed. Well, apparently,
my maid saw the towel in the dirty clothes decided it was not dirty enough to
wash. She took the towel out of the dirty clothes basket and hung it up
on the drying rack. Well, stupid me, the next time I went to take a
shower I went and got the towel off the rack, thinking it was clean.
Imagine my surprise when I got out of the shower and attempted to dry off with
a hair-infested towel. I was super-pissed.
Reason #3: She is really lazy:
One Wednesday night, I shaved my
head. After I was done, I did not shake out the towel like I normally
would, instead, I just left it on the bathroom floor. I was planning on
taking care of it, but I forgot. I did not think it was a big deal,
since the maid does not come until Friday. Well, she came on Thursday
and saw the towel on the floor. Instead of washing it, she hung it up on
the towel rack in the bathroom. All the hair that was in the towel fell
onto the floor and conveniently, she did not notice it.
Reason #4: She lies:
Whenever she does my laundry, she leaves
all my stuff in the dryer. She tells me that she is going to leave and
come back when the dryer is done, but she does not come back. All my
stuff in the dryer gets wrinkled.
Reason #5: She steals:
I am most perplexed by this. I
came to this country in November with 10 pairs of boxer brief underwear in
my luggage. After two and a half months, I now have 4 pairs.
What the fuck is that about? What could she be doing with my
underpants?
You know what? Never mind, I don't
want to know.
I feel bad. I know that she only
makes like QR 200.00 a month. This is like $50. How can I complain
about her work ethic when she makes that kind of money? But on the other
hand, why would I pay her any more when she sucks so bad?
Am I out of line here? As a
modestly raised white male, should I feel guilty for complaining about my
maid? I don't know what to do anymore. It would actually be easier
for me to not have a maid. I would not have to worry about sleeping too
late, or checking my towels before I use them. I could make sure my stuff
did not get wrinkled in the dryer. If I get rid of her, then I am pretty
much taking food out of her mouth. Why am I cursed with so much
responsibility? Oh wait, I know, its because of my thumbs.
I bet the maid saw them when I was asleep.
